Mineral County School District serves Schurz Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary, Hawthorne Junior High, and Mineral County High School. Enrollment data for 2023 reports 596 students in four schools Grades Pre-K through 12. Approximately 50 certified staff members and 75 classified staff support the four schools.
Hawthorne is known as “America’s Patriotic Home”. The Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot is the largest ammunition storage facility in the world and played a pivotal role in supplying ordnance to the Pacific Theater during World War II. Visitors can get a sense of the massive munitions works from many vantage points—more than 2,500 magazine storehouses are still standing.
Walker Lake is at the heart of Mineral County and is the terminus of the Walker River in Northwestern Nevada. The lake is the traditional home of the Agai Dicutta or Walker River Paiute Tribe. In Numu, Agai Dicutta means “trout eater”, reflecting the importance of Walker Lake and the Walker River for the tribe. Schurz Elementary is on the tribal land of the Walker River Paiute Tribe.
